A network organization that connects projects with appropriate fiscal sponsors and provides resources for both sponsors and sponsored projects. FSA members adhere to best practices in fiscal sponsorship and offer a range of models and focus areas.
Model A — Direct Project
The fiscal sponsor fully employs project staff, manages all funds, and takes on full legal and financial responsibility for the project.
Best for: New organizations wanting complete back-office support
Model B — Independent Contractor
The project director operates as an independent contractor of the fiscal sponsor. The sponsor holds the grant funds and pays the director.
Best for: Projects run by an existing organization or LLC
Model C — Pre-Approved Grant
A specific grant is channeled through the fiscal sponsor to the project. The sponsor receives the grant and re-grants it to the project.
Best for: One-time grants where a funder requires a 501(c)(3) recipient
Model D — Group Exemption
Multiple chapters or affiliates operate under the fiscal sponsor's group exemption ruling, each with its own governance.
Best for: Networks, chapters, and affiliated organizations
Model L — Single-Member LLC
The project is organized as a single-member LLC wholly owned by the fiscal sponsor, providing liability protection while maintaining tax-exempt status.
Best for: High-liability projects needing a legal shield
Accepts projects from all 50 U.S. states and territories.
